Hey Scotty, What do you think of Fram oil filters?

I only use the Fram Extra Guard filters, not the regular ones.

Agree on extra guard. It’s hard to get reliable info with just a casual web search because 1) most of the opinions come from amateurs, and 2) you never know who is supporting which websites and YouTube channels with free bennies (or $).
But putting my own money where my mouth is, I buy Fram extra guard filters unless Mobil1 is on sale. I am happy with my decision.

What about Fram Tough Guard filters?

Fram Tough Guard is very slightly behind Extra Guard, but better than both Motorcraft and ACDelco

Regular Fram, no. The ones @Doc is talking about, yes.

I use Wix myself, but Fram's upper offerings are good. Their basic filters though.....I can't recommend.

Scotty a few years ago mentioned the Fram premium ones were good, but to avoid the cheaper ones.  Realize also Fram makes filters for other companies as well.  Companies and products change over time, so not sure today where Fram stands.  Regardless, I don’t buy their products.  I go with Mobil 1 premium filters on my vehicles.  When it comes to oil filters, and Scotty has mentioned this before, you don’t want to cheap out and best to go with a premium one.

Not a fan of Fram.

I like Wix filters.

The only Fram filters I think are any good are the Fram Extra Guard filters.

The low-end Fram filters seem to be pretty poorly made from various cut-apart videos and articles I've seen. Their higher line Extra-Guard filters are OK, but I usually use NAPA Gold (made by Wix) or Purolator.

WIX is a really good one and I personally K&N but I recommend any typical brand that has a premium version.

YES they are great filters, especially the tough guard and ultra synthetic.

You're actually asking two different questions here -

Are Fram oil filters any good? - Yes

Are Fram oil filters crappie like people say - No

Here's an "inside" look at filters - there are many others

This is a very poor "shootout". The purpose of an oil filter is to filter the engine oil. This video makes no attempt to measure that performance.

I know Fram has been around a long time and readily available. Are they good quality?

please do a search to make sure your question wasn't already answered. Thanks.

If FRAM was so bad they’d be out of business by now. They are a filter company so you’d hope that after so many yrs in the filter business they would perfect their filters. It’s true and I agree the extra guard is not what I would call a high quality filter but for someone who’s driving a beater running conventional and changing oil every 3k mi, it’ll work fine. Now, FRAMs tough guard and ultra synthetic filters are actually pretty decent filters in my opinion and worth taking a look at next time you’re shopping for an oil filter. I used to be a guy that bought into these 7500- 9k OCI with these synthetics but I have since changed my mind. Any oil, regular or synthetic shouldn’t go over 5k mi before changing oil. I still live by the 3k mi interval even my vehicles using full synthetic and my motors always look great when I look inside at about 200k mi. Use a good filter wether fram or some other brand, and change your oil and all’s good.
