Fuel guage not working

I have a 2002 Tundra SR5 2x4 4.7 liter automatic with 170K miles. My field guage hasn't worked for a couple of years. I just fill it up every 250 miles. I have the three book set of shop manuals but can't find any info on trouble shooting to see if it's the guage or sending unit. Should I just replace the sending unit since it's easier than pulling the dash to check the guage. Can I syphon my gas or does the tank have a stop screen like my wife's Highlander?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, John

You can pull out the sending unit and test it with an ohm meter to see if it is working within specification. The shop manual should list the resistance range of the unit.
