Can you put a regular gas engine in a Flex Fuel vehicle?
My 2002 Flex Fuel Explorer's engine went bye bye. Gas engines are cheaper than Flex Fuel ones. So I'm wondering because a Flex Fuel vehicle can run on gas, can I put a gas engine in the Flex Fuel Explorer? If I can, what modifications are needed if any?
It would save me some money.
Let me know.
Thanks!!
no. the computer is calibrated for FF injectors
You would have to also bring over all the electronics, wiring harness, possibly modifications to the fuel system, etc. By the time you did all that it would probably be more expensive than just installing another Flex fuel engine.
However putting a lot of money into a 23-year-old Flex is not the greatest idea in the world. Unless you're buy a junkyard engine and doing the work yourself it's likely to be a lot of $$$$ down the drain.
In addition to the above comments, the vehicle's VIN also identifies the vehicle as Flex-Fuel capable. You can't change the VIN without getting into some serious trouble with the authorities. If you're going to put another engine in the car, don't cut corners.
