I have a 2012 Scion tC with a plastic gas tank. I had to remove the heat shield from under the tank. The exhaust has about 3-5 in clearance. Is it a cause for concern or will I be okay with out it?

It’s there for a reason, if you park under a cigarette or burning leaves, you know what happens next. Get it repaired.....
There is a reason for the gray shield. It is not like engine beauty cover. Fix it as soon as possible. You don’t want to put the car in fire.
It's not just a heat shield. For example my exhaust doesn't run under my tank, but the plastic tank is clad in metal anyway. The armor also protects it from rock strikes and stuff like that. So, it has a purpose being there.
