Gear shift to Drive; meter says Park.

My car this morning randomly would not gear shift to any of the gears I shifted to, it just says [P]RND.
So if I shift it to Reverse, Neutral, Drive, it doesn't change it, it just says it's still on park, the car revs it just the gear doesn't shift on change.

Make, model, year, mileage? A lot depends on how the transmission is controlled. On an old school trans with mechanical shifter I'd say the shifter mechanism has come loose or is broken. However late model cars with electronic controls add a whole lot more complexity with more to go wrong.

So when I checked the dipstick for transmission the oil was covering from cold to hot, then when I searched online for diagnoses I tried doing the "Heat up your car" trick by leaving it on and letting the transmission oil warm up. Then after 30 mins or so, I checked the dipstick again, and there was barely any on the dipstick, just a small droplet on the tip. I assume its low Transmission oil? My only issue is I have no documents for when it had it's last transmission oil change, and since I cant move my car, was wonder can I just add some for now until I can replace the filter, pan, and oil completely?

You can certainly add some. It may not help but it won't hurt. Be sure to use the correct fluid and follow directions for checking the level. Do not overfill. (On most vehicles the trans fluid is checked with engine warmed up and idling with transmission in Park, but check the specifics for your car.)

If you don't know when the trans fluid was last changed, it's time to change it.

Update. After checking my shifter cable, notice it was de-attached because the bushing was cracked and brittle. when I just slid it back on it, to see if that was the issue, the gears shifted. So it was a Bushing kit repair. Thank you guys for the help earlier!
