Hey Scotty, I'm thinking of buying a VW Golf MK4 1.6 16v with 167.000 miles on it. Runs fine with no warning lights on whatsoever. The guy who sells it asks for 2500 euros (here in Greece). What do you think?

In Europe those VWs are better made. If a mechanic says its in good shape, haggle accordingly for your local market and it could be a good car for the money.

Thanks a lot for your answer. I think I should go right ahead and buy it. The car is in great condition. Paint's good , interior is good, and these older VWs are known to be fairly reliable. Not as good as Toyotas, but nice cars overall

Yes they do seem to be popular and farely reliable in Euro countries, but don't expect much from an old 2500Euro VW

Of course I have my expectations quite low. I just look for a nice daily driver to get around town and some trips. Though with the current unfortunate situation I wont really go anywhere far from home. Anyway thank you. I think this car might just be ideal for what I want.

167k miles? That is about 260k km. Is that common price for such old Golfs with such mileage in your country?

Absolutely. Greek people dont drive their cars all that much, do you I should go ahead?

Then you must have high car prices there. Where I live, such old Passat goes for less money.

We do have rather high prices here but another factor that affects the price is the nice condition of the vehicle. Thank you once again. I think I will go ahead and buy it.

Even lower mileage Passats and Golfs 4 don't reach such price there. Have it checked by a mechanic before you buy it, specially for rust. Those are famous for being rust buckets. Good luck!

Try and knock the seller below 2000€, can't hurt to ask. Those mid 2000's Golf are pretty indestructible mechanically, though watch out for some of the over engineered creature comforts. Things like the electronic  brake pad wear systems could be shot, bulb replacement warning is likely to be also.

But all in all its a good buy

Thanks mate, i will do a thorough check of the vehicle and see if its worth it. Then ill come back and tell you the price i paid if i buy the car

So quite a few months have passed and I came back to tell you what happened. I ended up buying the car and it's been fairly good so far. When I first got it, I took it to my mechanic to do some basic maintanance and it needed some other things done. Since I got it I have changed the disks and pads on all 4 corners, replaced the 15 inch rims, with 16 inch ones from the GTI and that's pretty much all it has had done to it. It's been a great vehicle and I've managed to do another 20.000kms without any trouble. Would definetely recommend a vehicle like this to someone. Thanks for all your help
