Hello everyone, (Scotty, if you can inspect this car, im in Boston!)
Im about to buy my first car and i’ve got my sights on a CRV from a used car dealership.
2008 CRV EX-L, 171k miles, Auto-Tranny and the VIN starts with “J”.
What will be a good price for this vehicle?
What should i be on the look out for if i cant get a mechanic to come inspect it for me?
It’s listed at $10k
No. "He" says it's perfect? Are you kidding?
$3500 is a good price nowadays for a 2006 but...................... not with that many miles.
nope
uh uh
If a mechanic says it's OK a 16-year-old Matrix with that kind of mileage might be worth $2000. That's if it doesn't have the 2AZ-FE oil-burning engine, if it does maybe it's worth $500 but really in that case the guy should be paying you to haul it away.
This deal sucks. Walk away.
Got it, I’ve found another CRV, 107k miles, everything else is the same except no leather. What do you think of that deal?
Look for something else. It is a small car and with that age and mileage, so many things are worn out and can go wrong.
I’d say it’s a maybe. Almost anything these days that runs and drives is fetching 3 grand. So worth it for the car’s base value? Yes.
BUT- there’s a reason the owner is selling it. And it isn’t because it is reliable and running well. It will probably take a thorough inspection to know what you’re getting. And by thorough, I mean not just some guy off the internet to plug in a scan tool. I mean you’re going to pay an experienced mechanic (Scotty level or higher) to really go over it. Expect $2-300 for the service.
If it does check out, you’ll need to set your expectations. It’s not going to be a forever car, but you could probably squeeze a few more years out of the poor thing.

It’s a seller’s market today, unfortunately.. But do try your best to negotiate.

You really want to have any used car thoroughly inspected by a professional mechanic, to check for any red flags. I would walk away from any vehicle, which the seller wouldn’t allow you to have it checked out, by a mechanic of your choice.
Scotty, if you can inspect this car, im in Boston!
Scotty has recently said he’s booked out until he leaves. You can try to set up an appointment, in future. His contact info is in the forum FAQ.
Incidentally, other forum members have recommended a couple of shops in the Boston area - https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/qa/mechanics/ (incase you wish to have them inspect a shortlisted vehicle. However, Scotty or other members here aren’t affiliated with said shops, in any way.)
All the best!
Thank you, much appreciated.
Whats up everyone, still looking to purchase my first car and today i found a clean 06’ toyota matrix with 240k miles, auto-tranny from a private seller. $3500 is the price asked.
Is the mileage too high to consider purchasing? the positives are that he says it runs perfect and no rust.
My first car search continues, found a clean 04’ CRV, automatic, 176k miles, VIN start with an S (U.K.). Is the mileage too high or is this a good deal?

so 18 years old, high mileage. Unknown mechanical condition. Result of test drive unknown.
I'd say it's worth anywhere from "run away" to $1,000
i appreciate that
