Hard 2 Start

Scotty, I have a 2012 Audi A8L Quattro with 86000 miles.  It has an automatic tranny and it is starting to have a problem with starting.  It will start when fresh but as the day goes on it will have a hard time turning over.  What's up?

Does it crank or nothing at all?

Please don’t double post, thanks.

The double post, of course, was a mistake.

Also, yes it will crank, but will not stay and runs rough.

Thought that there might be a MAF sensor but could not find it.

did you try the FAQ?

Thanks, I will check FAQ'S out.

It could be a lot of things because it's a very complex Audi.

Check the following:

  1. Battery
  2. Battery on the key fob
  3. Starter
  4. Alternator
  5. Fuel Filter
  6. Fuel pump
  7. Blown Fuse

Or at worse case scenario-your engine is done for and you have to junk it.

What codes is it showing?

p0175 and p0172

It could be the MAF sensor or a faulty front 02 sensor.  Try cleaning the MAF sensor first then replace the front 02 sensor if it's not the MAF.

Thank you for the assist. One question. Where is the MAF sensor? Does this car (year, make and model), have one, or two since it is a quattro? Thanks

From what I could find it has one and is located between the air filter and the throttle body.  When you clean it, make sure to use only MAF sensor cleaner, not carb or brake cleaner.  The front 02 sensor has a pre-heater which usually burns out first and necessitates replacement.

Thank you sir. I will take a look.  I can't remember but I think it has two filters due to the turbos on each side I believe.  I will purchase the MAF sensor cleaner and a new O2 sensor just in case.
