my 70 cadillac eldorado has the 8.2 500 and is hard starting cold and sometimes seems suffering for gas when starting warmed up. As if the gas is draining out of the carb after sitting. Is this just a carb adjustment or missing a check valve in the gas line maybe?

Is the choke working?
After 53 years plus exposure to modern ethanol-contaminated gas it's a good bet that the carb needs to be overhauled or replaced if that has not been done already.
