My 2013 Scion (Toyota) iQ has zero problems except when I'm driving over rougher roads, hearing a pretty loud metal-on-metal clanging. Checked all four wheel bearings and checked muffler mounts and heat shields, all look solid. She doesn't pull and had all four tires aligned less than a year ago.
The noise is driving me zonkers....but hard to get it to be picked up on a video with my phone. With the windows down, seems to be coming from the middle-right side of the car.
I don't have access to a lift else I'd get all up in there and check all the tranny/engine mounts and manifold bolts.
Any suggestions?
What kind of shape are bushings on the sway bar and links?
Well you can try your luck and see if you got some change rolling around in the cabin haha. When checking the "connection points" on everything underneath the car did you check it by like trying to move it, or wacking the stuff. You don't need to use a BFG but some pounding can possibly replicate the noise.
gotta be something bouncing off the underside.
exhaust?
cat?
shocks?
something is loose.
Good tips....I have pushed down as hard as I could on each corner to see if maybe a shock or strut was making the noise...nothing. Maybe I can open a door and jump up and down on the door edge and see if that replicates it.
One of Scotty's videos has him using a sound device where you attach mics to various points and drive around and then you can listen to each one and see which one is loudest.
Check the exhaust heat shields. Better yet, record the sound and post the youtube video here.
The hunt continues...I had the day off the other day and took her to our local Christian Brother's mechanics to have them get her on a lift and check it out but they were busy and said it would take a couple days to get her in.
Since I do have the lifetime free alignment at Firestone, I'll bring her in for her alignment and ask the guys to check her out for causes of the rattle.
I was able to get the sound on video and logged in on my smart phone but can’t find how to upload my video...help!!
Youtube!
Okay here's the sound....hopefully it lets me copy the link from my Facebook. My friend thinks it's something in the suspension...sway bar or strut. I have an appointment with mechanic Friday...

Finally got a mechanic to check her out...got some worn out front struts and connecting rods and bushings that need to be replaced. He also showed me a rear shock that has the seal broken to leaked junk all over it so will have him swap that out with a new one. They had to order the parts from Toyota so will get them installed Tuesday or Wednesday when they come in.
Glad it wasn't an engine or tranny mount....they are running great!
