I know Scotty is (generally) very anti-turbocharger. But surely at some point turbocharges started being pretty reliable. Are there any turbocharged cars that Scotty recommends? It's getting to be very hard to find vehicles that aren't turbo charged.
But surely at some point turbocharges started being pretty reliable.
The older turbos were less complex and more reliable. Mine has lasted nearly 3 decades so far though it will probably need to be replaced at some point. (A new made-in-USA turbocharger internals cartridge is currently about $400 - expensive but not a fortune these days either.)
New turbocharged engines are more complicated and fragile than they were back then and much more difficult and expensive to service when the time comes.
It'll never be more reliable than a naturally aspirated engine.
It all depends on a couple of things:
- The manufacturer
- Size of engine and powertrain
Some of the turbocharged engines are better than the ones years ago but they still don't hold up overtime.
