Why would a shop want to send the heads off to be machined when doing a head gasket replacement what ate the possible consequences of not sending them off

If the heads are warped even slightly the new head gaskets won't seal properly.

Cool thanks what's a good estimate of what that cost on a 4cyl

Best to get estimates from some local machine shops. I don't know what current pricing is like. (Have not needed that kind of service in a long time.)

After a blown head gasket(s), I always get the heads rebuilt and resurfaced so they are at least as good as new.  Not doing this is a real risk for future failure.  Please consider using new ARP head studs(bolts) to install the heads.
