Scotty, I have a 2019 Ram 1500 classic with a 5.7 Hemi and 60,000 miles. I’ve heard a lot about the infamous Hemi tick, what are some things I can do to avoid having this expensive problem in my truck. Thanks

The 5.7 Hemi V8 is a solid motor and can reach at least 250,000 miles or more. All you need to do is keep up with the maintenance on this engine including changing the oil regularly with the correct oil. Since you're at 60k miles, change the oil right now (if you haven't).

I agree with @kp.  It’s not always preventable, but to the extent it is, it’s the oil. I’d change it every 5k.

In this YouTube Video a owner chose a different viscosity of oil for his 5.7L Hemi. It's an interesting perspective on how to stop Hemi Tick and on what might help prevent. The first pinned comment explains his logic and rational.

He believes 5W-30 synthetic oil is best, and he clearly knows IT IS NOT what is recommended in the Owners Manual.

Personally, I think he's makes a fair point..

#1 it's practically a brand new vehicle. One would hope that it doesn't already have issues. What about as it ages?
#2 so he's just masking the ticking with a heavier oil. This is the oldest trick in the sleazy salesman's book. But it just masks problems, not fixes them.
The manufacturer recommends thinner oil right (0w20 I believe) for the cylinder deactivation system. What's going to happen to that in the LONG TERM when you use 5w30? You can't prove anything with a bright shiny new engine. There isn't even a spec of dust on that thing.

#1 Agree
#2 Agree.. I'm not suggesting anyone do what he does/suggest.
Struck me as an interesting opinion Think his suggestion is basically the Hemi engine has remained largely unchanged for years, so he doesn't believe using heavier 30 weight instead of 20 weight will harm "his engine".
