Look at this Stupid Law They Just Made in Merry Old England

Hey Scotty!

So we need to leave 1.5m (5') between cars and cyclists now when overtaking:

https://news.sky.com/story/highway-code-revised-cyclists-given-priority-in-new-rules-as-drivers-ordered-to-keep-1-5-metres-distance-when-overtaking-12521747

And they can ride 2 abreast. So they get to cycle occupying the whole lane, and when we overtake the roads arn't wide enough to leave that 5' between us. Then they can report drivers to the police for breaking the law and the driver gets 6 points on their licence. 12 points and you're done.

Countryside lanes are even narrower than city ones. So if I'm driving a truck or a larger delivery van then they've just effectively banned overtaking bikes. And everyone has to stay behind the cyclist.

Move to America.

The English have been doing goofy stuff for many years now, like trying to figure out how automotive electrical systems are supposed to work correctly.

I'd love to. Trying to convince the family. They're afraid of guns and stuff. Trying to convince them there it's more dangerous living in the centre of London than it is living in a nice countryside town in America where every other person has a gun licence.

Guns are inanimate objects and are harmless. Just don't move anywhere near Alec Baldwin.  Just remember, cars do not drive drunk, spoons do not make people fat and pencils do not make spelling errors.

@Doc Ha! You might have to change that example soon when self driving cars start the carnage.

-I shoudn't joke really. Idiots are making decisions that are ruining peoples lives by varying degrees, or killing them outright and nobody is doing anything about it. Maybe the Canadians have the right idea...

Excellent point.

Canadian politicians don't have any good ideas.

Do any politicians have good ideas? Except for themselves?

@Doc I agree, I live in an area where guns are banned - and yet all the bad guys always have them. These laws are always only against the civilized majority.
I’d love to move, but it’s quite hard, hopefully one day I’ll have the opportunity. 🥲

The conversation is starting to drift off topic, so either steer it back or move on please.

Join the cyclists.

People often say stuff like this, although you may be joking. But I'm a carpenter by trade and need a van/truck to transport materials and tools. When they introduced the taxes in London (£40 a day I think + the daily mileage they're planning on introducing) a similiar thing was said without thinking about self employed tradesman.

It's funny how these laws always typically hit the everyday guy. Although it might dawn on supermarkets and other big buisnesses at some point that their delivery van times are going to skyrocket.

Bummer!.  This is what happens when people elect politicians who have no clue what reality is.

You mean career politicians have no idea what working people value most? Shocking!

What was the separation measurement before the new law?

Honestly don't know. I don't think there was one. As long as you overtook them without killing them I think it was considered a good maneuver.

FWIW, here is California law:

A driver of a motor vehicle shall not overtake or pass a bicycle proceeding in the same direction on a highway at a distance of less than three feet between any part of the motor vehicle and any part of the bicycle or its operator.

Now that's sensible, and AFAIK you guys have wider cars and wider roads.

I live in 30 miles away from  New York City. They did the same thing and added bike lanes to all the roads. Cyclist started hitting pedestrians to the tune of once a week. They did away with the law after only one year. The bike lanes still exist but cyclists are subject to the same rules as other vehicles. If you get mowed down when you cut somebody off or you kill a pedestrian you loose your driver license. You wonder if they make this stuff up to enrich all the lawyers.

Where is the car repair question in all this?

the forum is for car ADVICE. Please leave the policing to the moderators. Thanks.

Scotty rants about Tesla all the time in his live ‘car talk’..
