I own a 2008 2.4l 4 speed auto hhr. While the transmission hasn't gone out yet, it has 171,000 miles. A lot of those miles have been city the oast 30,000 miles, it has started to shift a lil harder recently but nothing too bad. I see used automatic transmission for only like 500 buck with 100k miles or like 80k on them. With used car prices being so high should I just put in a new transmission if it goes out or get another used car, preferably a manual transmission honda of some kind or mazda with manual. Any advice helps whether I like it or not?
I would drive it until something major breaks and replace the car.
Those HHR's weren't built the best and I wouldn't put a transmission in it just to need a motor replacement not soon after.
Do you think a civic si would be a good choice instead of a new edge mustang for a winter climate. Ik the civic is less powerful but I think it would be better for the winter even though I love the 4.6l.
The Civic would likely be better, yes. It would certainly be easier to handle in bad weather.
Thanks
sell it while it's still worth something
Lol ikr, I don't think my parents would let me do that sadly.
I thought you owned it
If the transmission still works, drive it until the transmission can't shift anymore.
These transmissions that you are looking at, are they remanufactured or from a junk yard? Does it have any warranty?
I don't believe so they are just junkyard units I'm pretty sure.
If you can sell it for a lot of money and you can get a good quality Honda or Toyota at a good price, sell it.
If not, save your money and drive the HHR until the wheels fall off.
Exactly my thoughts.
Don’t go for manual transmission at all. I did the same thing but it’s difficult to drive manual after driving automatic for years. Manual might be fun to drive. But you will get irritated after a month or so. Especially if you drive inside the city.
Speaking of your current transmission, if the metal inside the gearbox isn’t broken then you can change the transmission oil with filter and use Lucas transmission fix .
If you feel that the gears have started to shift better after using the Lucas transmission fix then use it again after some 1000-2000 miles.
It's a sealed unit and I believe the fluid has not been changed at all as I'm the second owner and my parents bought me the car and didn't look at that stuff.
Even if it’s the sealed transmission you can still get it checked by a mechanic. And if needed you can flush the old fluid.
