High Mileage Oil

This might be dumb or weird to ask but is high mileage oil safe to use? I read someone on Reddit  say that it could  potentially damage your engine since the extra detergent and other high mileage  additives are potentially adding more weight to the oil thus putting more weight on strain/stress on your engine ? Is this true? With that being said if it’s not, is high mileage oil even worth it?

High mileage oils won't damage anything but they don't have any real benefit either. (The seal conditioners included might help lube up old seals, but even that is questionable.)

There is a lot of hearsay, marketing and propaganda on the internet. Most of it BS.

The only source of data I could find was this page:

https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/

The guy claims to have some high-falutin credentials, but ironically he won't put his own name on it. Just goes by "540 RAT". Season with salt as required.

Mechanical Engineer (A Mechanical Engineer is clearly the most qualified Engineer to test motor oil that was formulated by Chemical Engineers, for wear protection capability between mechanical components under load.)

Holder of two U.S. Patents, with a third Patent pending, for breakthrough designs of Mechanical devices for Military and Commercial Aircraft

Member SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers)

Member ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)

Lifelong Gear Head, Mechanic, Hotrodder, Drag Racer, and Engine Builder

The page has absolutely horrible formatting, so you'll need to use you browser's search function. Search for these sections:

  • 18. ENGINEERING TEST DATA ON HIGH MILEAGE MOTOR OILS
  • 66. HIGH MILEAGE motor oil compared to Standard motor oil

Use chicken salt for extra flavour..

Reddit's not exactly the kind of thing I'd trust at face value. Scotty uses that logo as his picture in picture sometimes when he's talking about people who don't know what they're talking about.

I once accidentally put 5W-20 high mileage Pennzoil Platinum in my 2017 Mustang when I did its first oil change at 3,000 miles. It didn't do any damage to the motor. I use high mileage oil in my 1999 Ranger with 272k miles and also my 1979 Catalina as well. No issues.
