I recently purchased a 2016 Mazda 3 Sport GX (base canadian trim) with 40,000 miles on it. Previous owner has replaced the headlights with HIDs and I have a weird problem with it. 'OFF' on the stalk works fine same for 'AUTO', however when i set it to permanent low beams only the running lights are on and switching to high beams only turns the lowbeams on. I know that the highbeams work because they come on when I pull on the stalk. What is the probable issue?

Chances are that either your headlight and/or dimmer switch is faulty or the previous owner messed up the wiring when he installed the aftermarket headlights.

Put the OEM headlights back in the car.
