I just bought a 2008 Honda civic with 160,000 miles on it for 4,000. Would it be a smart choice to change the transmission fluid on it? I don't want to make the transmission start slipping on it.

If it's clean, change the fluid & filter (don't flush it!) but keep the original fluid in clean jugs.
This way if it starts to slip you can put the old fluid back in....at minimum do a filter.

Absent any service records, I would do like @russelljkelly81 says and change it out and the filter but keep the old fluid in case there is a problem.
