Honda CR-V Torque Converter whining

I have a 2004 Honda CR-V automatic transmission, with 211,000 miles. I just purchased at 205000 with no service history and 6 prior owners. Just got it to my mechanic who said the torque converter is going out; the symptom is a loud whining noise, especially in park, 1st and 2nd gear. The whining sound increases as the revs go up, and in third gear and beyond (as well as reverse) the sound isn't noticeable. Is the torque converter doomed? How do I make this car last as long as possible? Thank you!

The noise is a loud whiny noise, gets louder as revs go up. The transmission seems to shift gears fine though.

If your car does this whining in the park as well, odds are that is not only the torque converter and you may other internal issues with the transmission. Have a pro mechanic who works on the transmission to road test and scan it.
