Honda CRV Explosion

Scotty,

We have a 2011 Honda CRV.   It is the 2WD SE Model and is 100 pct stock.   The odometer is now showing approximately 150,000 miles. The other day as my wife was merging into traffic on the freeway she heard a loud explosion, felt the car throw her into another lane (thankfully there was no traffic), saw something fly from under the car, and then smelt a burning odor much like gun powder.   She pulled to the side of the road to assess and could not find anything.

She got back in, drove a couple of miles to her destination, and then called me to investigate.

Here is what I found:    lingering odor of gun powder, steering wheel tilted counter-clockwise 10 degrees, airbag light on dash, passenger airbag light flashing, a huge hole in the left hand plastic splash pan under the left rear door, and the left rear door no longer closes securely (as if it was sprung).

The vehicle appears to drive normally.   The engine and drive train show no signs of damage.

Do you think it is possible that gas and/or fumes may have dripped into the splash pan and somehow ignited?   Do you think that an airbag could have detonated without actually going off?

Your opinion will be appreciated.

Thanks & Enjoy Tennessee Neighbor    (I lived in Houston for 3 years - I understand your decision).
