If worn out piston rings cause an engine to burn oil, are there any test kits you could use to check if your piston rings are worn? Or are there other tests out there that you could use if an engine’s burning oil?

Easiest thing to do is check the oil dipstick and see if your oil level is low or going down. Check it every 500 miles to see if it is lower than normal. If it is burning oil then usually a lot of smoke will also come out of the exhaust when you run the car.

Do a compression test, dry and wet.

As @Doc says, the most accurate method is the compression test. Another test is to check the exhaust tip for any oily soot, if the car burns lots of oil.
