Scotty I have replaced batteries 3 times from Oreilys Auto Parts I have replaced battery, alternator, relay switch, thermostat, and soon to be gas pedal sensor and this has been in the last 4-5 weeks. This battery will not stay charged. I cant imagine all of these batteries are bad that I got.
What diagnostics lead to the replacement of those parts? What is the voltage at the battery when the engine is running? Have you checked for parasitic drain?
2004 Nissan Sentra 1.8 178,000 miles
First the car was over heating then the battery stopped holding a charge then acceleration position sensor when out so the car would not go forward or backward
For the battery problem I would check voltage at the battery while the engine is running. It should be nominally about 14 volts give or take half a volt. (Check with battery fully charged.) If voltage is low double-check wiring to the alternator, particularly small-gauge wires that may have corrosion at the connector. Also check ground connection between engine block and chassis.
If voltage is OK and battery is going flat, test for parasitic drain.
ok I will put a scan tool on it tomorrow and see what it says and then I will take those codes to the mechanic who is fairly reasonable and have them check for the parasitic drain when they replace the pedal since when the battery is charged it won't go forward or backward after a few mins. Everything on my car is standard so I cant imagine what would be draining the battery.
A scan tool may indicate voltage while running but it would be best to check it right at the battery terminals using a voltmeter.
It's an 18-year-old car, if there is a parasitic drain problem it could be almost any circuit has developed a problem. Typically the draw at rest would be about 25-50 milliamps for most cars and can be checked with an ammeter.
If you're taking the car to a shop they should know how check it out.
