I have a 2015 Toyota Camry with 120,000 and a reconditioned engine. It has some oil consumption every 5000 miles 1/2 quarter. If I will take care of this engine and replace the oil every 5000 miles, how long this engine could last?
Impossible to say. We don't know the engine's history or how it was "reconditioned". However 1/2 quart of oil every 5000 miles is not bad. (Most manufacturers consider using a full quart every 1000 miles to be "normal" for warranty purposes.)
Thank you Chuck, I understand. The engine has been replaced by Toyota dealer. The Toyota & Lexus dealers in SC buy their reconditioned or remanufactured engines from a company called JARCO, INC.
I called Jarco and they told me all engines they buy are 40,000 miles or less. They wrote on the website the following information about JARCO’s reconditioned engines:
Before Reconditioning:
-Removal from a domestic Salvage Vehicle. A Carfax is purchased which verifies the unit for low-mileage accuracy.
-A static compression test yielding less than 10% variance between cylinders.
-Visual inspection for any signs of damage, neglect of oil changes, water intrusion and indicators of fluid leakage.
Reconditioning with Genuine Parts:
-Replacing all external oil seals, Valve Cover Gasket (s).
-Water Pump.
-Models with items we identify as prone to leaks or liability (oil pans and timing covers) will be re-sealed prior to shipment.
-All Updates to TSB Items for the Partial Engine Assembly addressed and replaced with updated components before delivery.
-A thorough cleaning and detailing in order to duplicate condition of new unit.
That's all well and good if they actually did all that, but there is still no way to know how good a job JARCO actually did or to predict how long that engine will last.
I have owned many toyotas and Lexus, I think my best one burned a half quart every 4k miles or so.
Considering you are burning very little, that is great. My old 98 corolla would burn a quart every 2k miles, which isn't horrible, and it would probably do it for hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles.
I don't know how long it will last but it could last for a quarter of a million miles
