How long or how many miles does it take to reset/relearn the catalyst system?

1999 Honda Accord

I took my car in for a smog check. But the tech said that the catalyst system wasn’t ready or didn’t have enough information. So I couldn’t complete the smog check.  Which makes sense in retrospect, because I just changed the battery. He said to go drive it in the freeway.

How long does it take to reset, either in mileage or time driven?

It can take quite some time for the status monitors to complete. Look up the "drive cycle" for your car to speed up the process. (Next time use a memory saver so everything doesn't get reset when you change the battery.)

Thanks for the suggestion of the memory saver. Good idea.

Many OBD tools, even basic ones, are able to provide On-Board Monitoring Test Results (sometimes called Mode 6).

So just watch the Catalyst Monitor until it shows READY or PASS.

Drive cycle conditions that must be met are in your owner's manual.

Drive Cycle! That’s the keyword I am looking for. Thank you for the reference.

Example drive cycle procedure I found on the net and worked!
