How to Fix a Stripped Thread?

I have a 2009 Hummer H3 (~159,000 miles) and it has a front skid plate that is attached to a crossmember.

.

My problem is the threads for the skidplate attachment are stripped.  The crossmember itself has no threads (by design), but on the other side of the crossmember is a fixed nut (with internal threads of course) and the threads in the nut are stripped.

.

What are my options for repairing the stripped threads?

Chase the threads with a tap

Try that first. If the thread are beyond repair then you'll have to drill out the hole to a larger size, cut the threads to a bigger size, and switch to a larger diameter bolt.
Or if you have access, knock out the captive nut and weld in a new one.
Or install a Riv-nut

Or use a clip-nut
