I have a 1996 Toyota T100 SR5 V6 with an extended cab and automatic transmission, with the gear shift on the column. Recently there have been times when I have not been able to start the engine. After making a visual check of things I noticed that the gear shift was not in the PARK position.
Since then whenever I reach my destination and attempt to put the gear shifter into PARK position I notice the PARK indicator light is not on. If I leave it as then I am unable to start the engine. Sometimes I have to shift to the DRIVE position once or twice and then back to the PARK position and then the PARK position indicator light comes on, then I know that the transmission is in the PARK position.
It doesn’t happen all the time but lately it has occurred more often then not.. Can you tell me what I have to do to fix this
There’s a switch that gets engaged when you go into park. You have to determine if you have a wear issue on the shifter, or if the switch is bad. If the shifter actually moves into the park position and stays there then its likely the switch. If it sags, and then you can just push up or lift up on it to start then it’s the physical shifter.
Here is a link to the switch
