How do i now if my cars timing belt is broken? The car dosen’t want to start anymore and when the car was last running it was a weird sound from the engine, it sounded like a tappning belt or a rock that was inside the engine🤔

And when i try to start the car it has a weaker sound than usual. And few days ago when i tyred to start it haved a diffrent sound that was more powerful but now it sounds weaker. I don’t think it has anything to do whit the car battery because i have charged it

Remove valve cover...look for loose/out of place parts and then non-moving parts while cranking . If found, stop. It will have damage that will require exact knowledge and specialized tools to repair.

Either way sounds like its time for an engine rebuild or replacement. If you pop the timing cover off or valve cover and see that the belt is gone and its an interference engine then its probably done. And if it sounds like there is rocks in your motor then its super done.

Hi, sorry 'bout your car.  As others have mentioned, look up info on the engine to see if it is an interference motor.  What that means is with the timing off (lie when the belt breaks) any valves that were fully open will hit the pistons.  When  that happens, those valves will  be bent.  The piston may also be damaged.  If it were me, I would pull the timing belt cover to check the belt.  If broken I would pull the head, and look for damage.  If just a valve or two, and the car's worth it,  I'd have the head fixed.   If pistons are involved, I'd 86 the car.

@krowdog
So if it’s an interference engine then that is bad. But mine isn’t that or ?

To be sure you should examine the timing belt. This may involve removing a cover. Find out if your car has an "interference" engine. If it does, and your timing belt broke, the engine is pretty much toast.

@chucktobias
How do i now if my car is an interference engine? It’s an old Audi A3

@chucktobias
1.8, 1.9 and 2.8 L Audi engines are of interference design.

@chucktobias
My Audi has 1,6 L engine with petrol and manual transmission

@chucktobias
So my cars engine is not that interference engine and that is better right?

If this list from 2014 is to believed it is not an interference engine:

http://yourcarangel.com/2014/07/interference-engines-complete-list/

I did Google if my car is an interference engine and did find that too, but there is not that 1.6 engine anywere so i Will take my car to a mechanic for more inspection.

The fsi is an interference engine.

What is fsi?

You said you had the gas 1.6 Liter engine, it's referred to as a 1.6 L FSI engine. Other that this one, it's the only 1.6 GAS engine they make as far as I know. Sry, should have not assumed...

When i Google it it says
Modification (engine) 1.6i (107) hp

Powertrain Architecture Internal Combustion engine

Model Engine AVU, BFQ

Never saw that engine... may be euro specific... so dk but a good guess is it's interference. Plenty of good advice above on checking to see if timing belt is broken, I was just trying to add to interference engine knowledgebase here. My apologies for the distraction.

The way to know for sure is to take it to a mechanic.
