- Hello Scotty, I recently got a check engine light on my 2014 toyota Avalon xle (v6) I towed to the shop and codes came back with p0712 and p0793. They told me I needed to replace the transmission it only has 98k miles on it. I’m the second owner and had for 8 years took really good care of it and never had a problem till today. This shop did the transmission fluid change 2 months prior, but they never mentioned my transmission had metal shavings to indicate a potential problem in the future. Do I really need a replacement or can changing the sensors and fluid change help. I feel they want just want to charge me a large bill for the transmission job which they quoted me $4500 parts and labor used transmission with 3 months warranty or 3k miles, which I find ridiculous! Thanks Scotty for your time.

There are possible causes for those codes other than internal transmission failure. (Obviously though seeing metal shavings in the fluid is not a good sign if true.) For a major issue like that I'd get a second opinion, preferably from a good local/independent transmission specialist.
