I have a 1987 4Runner 22rec, manual 200k. Why do I have to keep tapping the gas pedal to kick the idle down

Check for binding and crudded up throttle linkage.
I did. Put a stiffer spring on it to.

Did you disconnect the air intake and clean the throttle plate with carb cleaner?

Disconnect the hose connected to the idle air control valve and see if it's blocked.
