I have a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel; the other day I used it to pull a boat out of the lake off a beach, the truck is so heavy it sunk in the sand, when I would shift from drive to reverse to try and free the truck, I would get a big "ca thump" noise from the transmission, is their something I should be doing so as to avoid this noise which is probably causing damage? Thank-you.
I was in 4 X 4 (4 wheel drive) when I was shifting from drive to reverse and back to drive. Is the noise even coming from the transmission, or is it from the transfer case? What should I be doing so as to prevent damage.

you could try pausing momentarily in neutral before making the next shift. But it sounds like your tranny is calling out for help ( a rebuild)
