If no oil was put in the engine you would not have gotten very far from the shop before it self-destructed.
Where did you get the oil changed? If at a quick-lube joint like Jiffy Lube or a chain shop like Pep Boys or Firestone it would not be surprising at all if they messed something up like using the wrong oil filter, putting in the wrong amount of oil, or damaging wiring for sensors.
