I learned a lot simply by watching Scotty’s videos. That’s the shadowing. If your high school doesn’t have an auto program, check with community colleges. Most allow high school students to attend. You can also start out at a dealership. Even if it’s not a mechanic position, you can work your way in. Many places offer service porter (which basically means you pull the car in and out the shop) as the lowest entry level position. I think most will require you to be 18 to be a tech or porter though, but if you’d like a start in the industry you might be able to do something else at 16.

You can also buy an old cheap car if you have garage space and build it up and you’ll learn a lot in the process.
