I was told my ecu needed replaced on my 1998 Honda CR-V and that I could put a used one on but it needed to be from the same year and the numbers on both had to match. Is this true?

I was told my ecu needed to be replaced on my 1998 Honda CR-V and that I could put a used one on but the numbers on both had to be identical. Is this true?

Yes, if the part number matches especially if the date code or firmware version are the same.
