Idle Diesel Engine

Does making your diesel idle for a prolong period of time damage it? Or modern diesel engines are not that susceptible to that kind of mishap?

It just so happens that I got caught up within my car's coding hours and have to spend some 2 hours inside a mall parking lot while inside my car. Then I read on some website, Quora I think, that idling a diesel engine is bad.

My car by the way is a 2021 Toyota Innova Diesel engine.

Traditionally, diesels have been designated for applications with long idling times. But prolonged idling should be avoided with contemporary diesels because it can cause problems with the diesel particulate filter (DPF). The DPF traps exhaust particulates (soot) that are often generated at low temperatures and burns them off when exhaust temperatures are high. DPFs often include a separate fuel injector that adds raw fuel to the exhaust gasses to ignite and burn off the trapped particles (“regen cycle”).
But prolonged idling with low exhaust temps can increase fouling of the DPF.
To minimize this, make sure to use good quality fuel (consider a fuel additive) and the proper spec oil.
