[Closed] Can I Improve MPG by adding a turbo?

Topic starter

I have a Chevy with a 4.3L V6.  If I add a turbo then back off the fuel so the net result is I still have the same horsepower as before I install the turbo... I would think I should see a improvement in MPG. What is your thoughts?

Please follow ALL the instructions when posting a question. We cannot give accurate answers without all the info. Thanks.

No, you will not save any gas that way and could well wind up ruining the engine. (Factory turbochargers are complete systems that include internal engine modifications as well as additional electronics.)

How do you intend to "back off the fuel"?

The whole purpose of a turbo is to stuff more air + fuel mixture into the cylinder. If you lean the mixture, then it will run worse than before and you'll destroy the engine.

But you are ignoring one glaring fact. To install a turbocharger on your engine, and retune the computer is going to cost thousands of dollars. (maybe tens of thousands if it's a newer vehicle. You did not say.). You will NEVER save enough money on fuel consumption to get that money back.

Welcome new member,

its a logical question.  But the reality is what @mmj says.

Aftermarket turbo and supercharger kits, to the extent they are available, are mostly intended for weekend hobby-racing.  Not daily driving.  You’ll find better ideas for improving fuel economy using the search function above.

Best regards.

So you want to make your fuel mixture incorrect?

Your car is working hard to keep the mixture correct with sensors and electronics for a reason.

You won't get more energy by just adding air it comes from combustion with fuel - You will get lower performance.
