Hello wonderful community.
I have an 06 Accord 2.4L with 163k miles. For three months I've been getting code P1009 (Variable Valve Timing Control Advance Malfunction). It will trip the engine light after driving for an extended period of time and then go away on its own. Any insight as to what is going on? Do I need to be concerned? Should I fix this immediately?
My scan tool is a simple FIXD scanner so it doesn't go into a whole lot of detail. FIXD says it's a severe issue but that the only consequences are that I would fail inspection. I do have some freeze frame data:
Intake manifold absolute pressure: 91kPa
Engine RPM: 32130 rpm
Vehicle Speed: 46.58 mph
Timing Advance: 15.5 degrees
Intake Air Temperature: 104.0 F
Thanks!
I assume Variable Valve Timing Control Advance Malfunction, means the VTEC system in a Honda.
1) Make sure you are up to date on oil changes, and that you do oil changes frequently at the recommended intervals with the proper oil. And obviously, makes sure you have the proper amount of oil in the system. The VTEC system (at least the system I am familiar with) uses oil to actuate the system. Dirty oil or low oil can mess with the system, or prevent the system from engaging.
2) Visually inspect the VTEC actuator, for any oil leaks. I don’t know the technical name of it, I think that is what it is called. On my 1999 Accord, it is located behind the engine. Not sure where it is on the 2006.
3) I don’t actually know how to test what is wrong with he VTEC actuator. But somethings that can go wrong with age and or usage:
- clogged filters
- worn out gaskets
- faulty actuator
Good luck, let us know how it goes.
