Hey,
I am looking for a project car, I found a 1998 Honda Civic LX 4d 140k with an automatic tranny.
The seller is asking for 700. Of course, it's got some issues for that price.
It’s got a hissing noise coming from the driver's side.
My assumption is a vacuum leak or AC leak or some sort. Yet I’ve not looked at the car yet.
It looks like it’s been in a wreck due to the fender and hood being replaced. But I’m not looking for a daily driver, more just something I can learn from and not have to worry about getting to work or school the next day.
there are two codes, one has to do with the CAT, and the other the seller is unsure of but will inform me before we meet up.
The seller no longer will drive the car due to the noise. But also stated it jerks at low speeds.
The jerking could be a transmission issue or something else, like fuel injectors or part of the vacuum leak if that’s what it is. I don't plan on dumping a crap ton of money into it either, like replacing the trans or engine. I mean they're asking bucks for a car that kind of runs.
Before even thinking about buying the car I will look through everything in detail. To check the tranny health and engine health. Also to get an idea of what needs to be fixed.
A local junkyard is willing to buy it for 450. So if it does not work out, I will not lose too much.
What are your thoughts?

It might be an OK project to learn on, but automatic transmissions on older Hondas are weak. For something that old a stick shift would be preferable. It sounds pretty sketchy overall.
With all those problems it's probably only worth half the asking price and it might still quickly wind up in a junkyard if it the transmission is shot or it has a blown head gasket or other serious mechanical problems.
