Scotty, is it safe to say that a pickup truck is a car?
No they are not in my opinion
I think that sedans, hatchbacks, minivans, and crossovers are cars but REAL Suvs, pickup trucks, and some vans are trucks.
No.
No offense, DayWalker, but why not?
IMHO, cars are like sedans like Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. Cars( sedans). Cars typically have better gas mileage than trucks. Trucks are like workhorses that has a pickup bed in the back. Also, cars and truck are part of the vehicle class.
@Sapporo Boy we have car, CUV, SUV, pickup truck, and truck. In general, trucks (and pickups) are body on frame, sit higher, usually have solid rear axle, can go on dirt roads, can hold and tow more cargo while a car is unibody construction, sit lower (than a pickup or truck), not intended to go on dirt road, and limited in payload/towing capacity. But I think the biggest differentiator in modern times is body on frame vs. unibody construction. For that reason, a CUV is a lifted car, and an SUV can be considered a truck. (I call my SUV a truck.).
I would refer to it as a vehicle that way you are safe either way.
I like to use the term vehicle for the same reason as stated my Mr. A.
Depends on the situation. Why do you ask?
The best terms to use to describe these means of locomotion: vehicle or automobile.
Generically speaking, car may refer to anything with four wheels and a means of propulsion. Car is short for carriage. as in horse carriage. But these days, there is a more precise usage for cat
It is more accurate to differentiate between cars and trucks.
Where I live, we use the word car or automobile for vehicles from passanger cars to pickups, some even for trucks when talk.
