Some part of AC seems to be is a making a sound similar to that of a groaning power steering pump. Last time I heard it I turned off the AC and sound went away so AC seemed like the source. AC works well. Is this something to worry about ? System takes R12 which costs about $120/lb.

P.S I bought the pair of ATS 505 fuel/oil additives. Did the fuel two days ago and will do the oil in a few months when i next change the oil. Finger crossed.
Thank, John
Check the fan belt and pulleys. Also check if it's your HVAC fan by seeing if the noise persists with just the heater turned on. If they're OK the compressor is probably wearing out and getting noisy.
If it is the compressor it would be best to replace it before it seizes up and contaminates the rest of the system with metal fragments, requiring everything to be replaced.
Another thing to check is your cooling fans. Typically all electric fans will turn on with the air conditioning and they can certainly make noise when worn. (I once had an electric radiator fan disintegrate and fall out in the road in pieces!)
