2012 Genesis Coupe 2.0t Automatic 84k miles

Hey everyone. Currently have an option to buy a 2012 Genesis Coupe as my first car. I prefer the car to be a coupe, so please don’t comment on the practicality. How are they in terms of reliability, quality of ride, etc? Did anyone own one? How was it? All feedback will be appreciated. Thank you. Would also appreciate a comment from Scotty. What do you overall think about the car?

Well... 2012 is THE WORST YEAR of the Genesis according to carcomplaints.com

Scotty has said countless times that he is not a fan of Korean cars.

Not a smart move.

If you enjoy spending huge amounts of money on frequent repairs a Genesis is the ticket.

Welcome first time poster!

Agree with the above.  Run away.  Korean cars, especially of that vintage, have a reputation for going rancid around 70-80,000 miles, which is likely why the seller is getting rid of it (regardless what he says is the reason).  And @mmj is right, Scotty has mentioned this in many videos over the years.

If you are looking for a compact coupe, I would consider:

  1. Scion tC.  Super reliable.  Inexpensive to maintain.  You should be able to find one in any budget.
  2. Scion FRS/Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86.  Certainly gonna be a little more expensive than the Genesis you are looking at, but should hold value better over time. As performance cars go, it is very forgiving and suitable for an inexperienced driver.
  3. Honda Civic coupe.  The gold standard in the segment.  Kinda bland (unless you bolt on a bunch of ridiculous mods), but I guarantee in 30 years you will look back at your first car with fondness.
