Is there any reason to have locking wheel lugs?

my beloved 2006 vw beetle came with locking wheel lugs that require a ‘special’ tool to remove.

Should i just replace them with regular lugs — i do have the tool, but seems an un-necessary complication.

It is to discourage theft. Up to you whether or not you believe it is worth it.

All my vehicles have those - I would leave them in to mitigate possible theft.  Just don’t misplace or lose the special tool.

If you look around the neighborhood and  see cars sitting around with missing wheels keep them. If not you don't need them.

Locking lugs are for expensive, fancy wheels, and ghetto neighbourhoods. Your call.

Lol ghetto neighbourhoods..

If you have stock rims, I don't think they're necessary unless you have to park outside in the street and/or high crime area, or if they're a desireable wheel to have.  My wheels came with a pattern lug lock but I replaced them with stock lug nuts because my wheels are stock and a pretty basic design. I pictured myself trying to change a tire at night in the rain with the cheesy jack that came with the car and having to struggle with a lock nut trying to get the wheel off.

Just keep the tool in your glove box.

Depends where you live and where you park your car often.

If it is a safe area…

Personally, if you have the key, I wouldn’t go out of my way to change them, maybe on the next tire change.
