I currently only use Mobil oil but always find name brand oils like castrol or Pennzoil for half price retail sometimes (sealed new). My question is it better to be consistent and only use a certain type of oil or doesn't matter and all it is is to lubricate pistons/bearings?
question 2: i drive city 80 percent of the time and get 4-5 months of -30 C in winter, should I continue changing oil every 5k miles or do it 3k miles?
also what do you think of fram ultra synthetic oil filters? alot of people talking poorly of fram but i also found other ppl who say positive things. i watched some vids on cutting them in half and they look pretty solid
thx
Folks who constantly switch from brand to brand are more likely to have oil consumption problems. Why? Different additives among brands tend to create undesirable chemical reactions in the engine. All of these brands (Mobil 1, Castrol, Pennzoil, Vavoline, etc.) are good. Mixing one or more of them? Not so good.
My advice is to pick a good oil and stick with it. If the vehicle develops oil consumption issues, return to what you used before.
alright thats fair thanks
I'd just stick with Mobil 1. Switching oil brands a lot can cause problems due to different additives as mentioned by @geriscan.
And I'm not a fan of Fram. Get you a Wix filter and call it a day.
sounds good thanks
I've never stuck to any one brand, and I have never had leaks or other problems.

I mean as long as it's full synthetic and is the correct weight for your car I don't see a problem, I'm sure expensive oils protect better but all oils sold in the US have to meet a specific standard, I run super tech high mileage full synthetic with a synthetic fram filter and change it every 3500 miles cause my car is older and never have any problems also depends on your mileage too
