Keep Lexus CT200h with 20,000 KMs or sell and buy a Corolla in Ontario?

Hi Scotty,

My Dad is going to gift me his low kilometers 2013 Lexus CT200h (Lexus Prius) and I thought I might sell it and buy a new Corolla. It's a truly Grandpa driven car. He's just used it for grocery runs etc...

But, I think you said the Corollas are now made in Mexico and you said the quality won't be as good as it was when they were made in Cambridge or Japan.

Because of this, I was thinking I'd just keep the CT200h.

What do you think? Pros and Cons?

Thanks Scotty.

TBH, depending on your culture, it could be an insult to get rid of a gift so soon. If not, then no worries.

On top of that, getting a Corolla would be a lateral move. Both are based on the same Toyota MC or New MC platform. And those two probably share more in common than not.

Thank you, I understand the concern, but my Dad wants me to do whatever I think is best. It's not a worry in this case.

The only thing is the Lexus is a hybrid so I was concerned about battery maintenance, but I looked at Consumer reports and it has a 5/5 reliability rating.

I have a 2004 Prius with 295K miles. I just had battery problems at 270K miles. With that low mileage/kilometers, you don’t need to worry about the battery for awhile.

On top of that, it’s a free car.

Just go have fun with it.

FWIW, the warranty for Toyota batteries went from 8 years / 100,000 miles to 10 years / 150,000 miles.

That is great to hear! Thanks, now I am leaning towards keeping it.

Just keep the Lexus if it still runs well. Plus, 2020 was the first year of the generation and the fact that there WILL be kinks not fixed should be a bigger reason not to get the Corolla rather than where it was made. Plus, I'd get a used one for a better price rather a new one. But you have a Lexus that was taken care of and you know the history so why let go of it.

Right, I am starting to think so too.

I would like to keep it for some time so I was wondering how long the hybrid batteries would last.

They can last quite some time. If you really want to sell the car, put it on sale and see how much you will get. If you are happy with the price, then sell it.

I'd say WORST CASE scenario upwards of 100k miles but the Prius batteries can be seen going up to 250k miles like Yaser said see what you get on craigslist if you are debating to sell it or not when you get a bit more miles on it.

So it is. Tell us, … last time you saw another CT200h driving by, … do you remember the driver of that car? Was it grandpa driving it? Was it a young pretty girl? A red neck? Perhaps a someone like you, … a lookalike? I didn’t think so, … just keep a darn car!

Anyway, … vid, song. Hear it out: https://youtu.be/mQZmCJUSC6g
