Keep Volkswagen or buy late model one?

Hello everybody.

My son´s 18 years old. He´s been driving for 6 months now. In February, he purchased a MY98 Volkswagen Golf with a diesel engine (third gen).

It has the 1.9 TDI engine with a 5-speed manual, and believe it or not, 480 000 km (298 000 miles).

It was originally black, he resprayed it purple. He has installed a custom steering wheel and wheels and lowered the suspension a bit.  He added a small spoiler and tuned up the engine from 66 kw (88 hp) to 110 kw (150 hp). The seller was his friend who was honest so he told my son that the car needed a turbo and fuel injector replacement.

Should we keep this car? I would have no problem buying him a more "modern" Volkswagen, but this old third gen is so reliable I cannot believe it. It is still running and always starts.

My son doesn´t  want to hear about me getting rid of it. He´s in love with the Golf. Does it car have life in it?

Thank you,

Diana

Get anything except a VW, if you have to."Buy him a more modern Volkswagen?"  Wow, I wish you were my Mom.

If you need to get him a newer more reliable car then definitely not a VW. For reliable car and newer consider some Toyota or Honda; Civic or Corolla in this case I think is good enough for him. The VW he has is kind of old so you should expect repairs coming up.
