Kia Smart stop and go

Hi Scotti

I bought a 2021 Kia Sorento back in late 2020. In December it got real cold ,like 18F, and the car always defaulted to auto start / stop  on startup. That meant while stopped at a intersection the engine shut off. The heat would turn off and if the traffic light was long it started getting cold. There is a button to defeat this but it was a nuisance if I forgot. It was a real pain if I had passengers. My daughter would shout up to the front "Dad why did you shut off the heat again  You know your real lame!!".  I am an electrical engineer by trade and I work on cars as a hobby. So I set about reverse engineering this system. I ripped the dashboard apart of my brand new car, located the section that controlled this mode and built a circuit that detected when the ISG defeat light would go out and turned it back on. The circuit remembers what the last setting when the car was turned off and puts it in that mode on startup. There are now some after market modules that do this but in January of 2021 they did not exist. So far the fix has been working without incident.

One of the reason I bought the car was I thought the engine was so quiet on the 1st test drive. Little did I know that the engine was in fact shutting off. It's not unreasonably loud when idling but I can't help but feel a little hood winked. Other wise based on the last year it seems to be a good car.

Here's the questions:

1. Is this why they use this really thin motor oil. My old Santa Fe used 10W30. This uses 0W20 which pours out like water.

2. Can you think of any long term effects of keeping the engine on.

3. Do I have to admit to my 16 year old daughter that I was in fact hood winked?

4. Am I lame like my daughter says. {black}

  1. it might have a little bit to do with it, but it's definitely not the sole reason. Most cars are using thinner oils these days.
  2. A little bit more fuel consumption
  3. never show weakness. Children can smell it.
  4. of course you are. And some day, so will she.

😉

Thanks

You seem to have gone to a lot of trouble for simply forgetting to push the start/stop button after starting the car so it wouldn't shut off.  Why?

I just kept forgetting. The heat shutting off in cold weather, the jerk when accelerating on a green light among other reasons. I figure if there is a button to defeat it I am breaking no law by making it automatic. If anything I think its less wear and tear on the starter and engine not to be starting over and over again. Others must be having the same issue or they would not be selling defeat modules that cost $77.

And yes I am lame, I admit it. Just don't tell my wife. {black}

I know. I have been told this before. Here was Scotti's take on this a couple of months ago.

It was half forgetfulness , half the challenge. Lame yes , beaten into submission by Kia never!
