I have a Mitsubishi FTO GPX 1996 with 214,000km in automatic. A few weeks ago started makeing a sound like a flag flapping in the wind I didn’t take much notice until I showed my father and it started up with a bad knock that was the first rive I ever heard it, we set the tappets again thinking it could be them but sadly not I have checked the timing and it is 10 degrees out could it be the timing? My dad thinks it is rod knock and that we should rebuild the engine?

10 degrees is far too much.
Does this have a timing belt?
