Knocking noise

Scotty, I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 2wd crew cab LT automatic with 252,000 miles. When driving I heard a knocking noise in the rear so I shook the truck side to side and it was knocking. Is there play in the axle?  What do you think.

Well it could be lots of things Jack the vehicle up in here to check for play that's the best way and if you can't find the source watch my video finding the source of car noise is Scotty

I lifted the truck and I checked to see if anything was loose in the rear and I didn’t see anything so I grabbed the back tire and pushed and pulled and I heard the knocking noise. I got somebody to shake it and I looked between the drum brake and where the axle goes up to it and it was moving and that is where the knocking noise was coming from.

Check your shock absorbers where they mount to the body.  Many times, the rubber insulators in the shock eyes wear out allowing a clunking, metal to metal sound.

I checked the shock mounts and they were not moving at all

Your rear wheel hub and bearings may be worn out.
