I would go 4Runner
Get the 4Runner. You benefit from better mpg and less maintenance costs in the long run.
I agree with everyone on the 4runner but $12k in this market won't get you a lower mileage or anything on the newer side. Even a 10 year old 4runner if you want it to not have extremely high mileage is going to cost more than $12k. The thing with 4runner is it keeps its value pretty well.
I personally would look for a 4Runner that fit my price point and checked out. The LX isn’t a bad choice, just a little more expensive to maintain. Depending on the year, the 4Runner and the LX are built by on the same body on frame platform.
You are going to need a bigger budget.
Like two to three times that for anything remotely reliable and made in the last decade that will fulfill your stated needs.
The Lexus is absolutely awesome, but the 4Runners are almost indestuctable, and won't cost as much to maintain and repair.
Both are good but I'd go with the 4Runner. A bit more expensive but well worth it.
Be sure to check for frame rust with either one
4Runner because of cheaper repairs, when needed.
