2014 Lincoln MKX
Car suddenly lost all acceleration on the expressway. Checked the serpentine belt, it's in position and intact, no error codes on the dash. Gas pedal depresses without resistance.
I start the car up and it shuts off with a warning message to check the charging system.

started it up to a clicking noise,
battery is dead. Alternator probably kicked the bucket. Get them checked out for free at the auto parts store.
Check the air and fuel filters first-probably clogged and needs replacement.
really? you would just ignore the warning message?
Thanks Paul, you're making a lot of sense. I started the engine and thought it would engage the alternator so I could idle comfortably while making calls and getting info. The engine turned off without warning.
I've left it off for a couple of hours and started it up to a clicking noise, just like a lack of power from the battery and the engine did not turn over. This got me to think maybe the engine drew enough gas to turn over before but the supply was cut short somehow, and whatever is the culprit could have gotten worse in the few hours?
