I recently purchased an 01 solara for 1500 bucks engine great, tyranny great, but previous owner says he replaced rack and pinion. Both front wheels off the ground I get about a quarter inch play at both wheels. I stand over engine bay, and move wheel back and forth with my knees. I see the shift moving in and out of the boot. Could it be that I only need to to adjust tie rods out equally?

It could be that the outer tie rod ends are worn.
